President Trump Faces Criticism for Disparaging Black Female Reporter

During a recent news conference near the Reflecting Pool, President Donald Trump came under fire for his remarks toward Rachel Scott, a senior correspondent from ABC News. The event took place in a location that is part of several renovation projects he has been involved with in Washington, D.C.

Scott posed a question to the president about why he was focusing on these projects at a time when gas prices were rising and tensions were high in Iran. “Mr. President, we are here against the backdrop of a war in Iran,” she asked. “Why focus on all these projects as gas prices soar?”

Trump responded by emphasizing the importance of keeping the country beautiful and safe. He described the area around the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument as “disgusting” and claimed that crews had removed “11 or 12 truckloads” of garbage from the Reflecting Pool. According to the president, the pool was built around 1922 and needed significant work.

However, reports from USA TODAY indicated that one contractor suggested the pool could be cleaned up in about two weeks. The decision to repaint the pool in “American Flag Blue” was also mentioned during the discussion.

Trump dismissed Scott’s question as “a stupid question” and accused her of being part of “ABC Fake News.” He further criticized her, calling her “one of the worst reporters” and “a horror show.” The president also labeled her question as “a disgrace to our country” before whispering something to a Secret Service agent and leaving the scene.

This is not the first time Trump has targeted Scott. In 2024, during a meeting with the National Association of Black Journalists, he criticized her for not greeting him before asking a question. He also made similar remarks when she questioned him about an unreleased video related to a U.S. military operation.

The president’s comments sparked backlash on social media. Users expressed frustration with his treatment of women and his tendency to attack journalists. One user wrote, “This from the guy who just dumped toxic waste all over the East Potomac Golf Course. Washington, D.C. was beautiful before he came, and now the Kennedy Center lies follow, the reflecting pool is blue, the East Wing is in shambles, and the White House is littered with cement patios and statues.”

Another user noted, “It’s the fact that he is always disrespectful to women, and not one man ever says anything about it.” Many praised Scott for her persistence, with one comment stating, “Thank you, Rachel Scott, for asking the questions we want answers to. Wish your colleagues were as relentless as you in seeking the truth.”

Despite the criticism, Scott may have found some vindication. ABC News filed a lawsuit against the president on Friday, alleging that he violated its First Amendment rights by investigating whether “The View” broke a requirement for equal time to political candidates.
