The Sniper: Past, Present, and Future Missions

The Evolution of the Sniper

A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates from a concealed position, often using advanced technology to engage targets at long distances. Unlike drone warfare, which can result in unintended civilian casualties, snipers are known for their precision and ability to avoid collateral damage. My first exposure to the world of snipers came through Carlos Hathcock’s book Marine Sniper, which captivated me with its vivid portrayal of the role. However, the snipers of Vietnam were vastly different from those of World War II, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The Sniper of the Past

Decades ago, snipers relied on more primitive methods. They would manually sketch target packages, a far cry from today’s digital tools. Modern snipers use SLR cameras embedded in digital packages, paired with ruggedized laptops, and transmit data back to base via satellite. Shots beyond 1,000 yards were rare due to limitations in bullet technology and a lack of understanding about the complex factors involved in long-range shooting. Today, snipers must account for the Earth's rotation when taking shots over such distances.

The Sniper of Tomorrow

The future of sniping promises even more advanced tools. Imagine remote camera-operated guns placed in strategic locations, controlled by AI assistants that calculate angles, ranges, and shot solutions. Snipers could also use Predator-like camouflage and disrupt enemy communication systems using radio frequency and WiFi jammers. Inspired by shows like Squid Game, smart guns on the battlefield might feature facial recognition and tracking capabilities, allowing bullets to follow targets like heat-seeking missiles.

Top Sniper Missions of Today

Overwatch

One of the most critical roles of a sniper is overwatch. A special operations team conducting a direct action mission may have a sniper or pair of snipers positioned to monitor the team from a vantage point. Their responsibilities include protecting the team, reporting on the situation, and eliminating threats as needed. This mission is common in both rural and urban settings, as described by Chris Kyle in American Sniper. I’ve experienced similar missions from helicopters during nighttime ship landings, where the advantage of night vision goggles and high-powered scopes made the task easier.

Long-Distance Reconnaissance

In Afghanistan, I conducted extensive long-distance reconnaissance missions. Using long-range optics, I tracked and reported on targets, often coordinating air support to eliminate them. These missions required patience, precision, and an acute awareness of the environment.

Hunt and Kill

While I had the opportunity to participate in the "hunt" aspect of a mission in Afghanistan, the planned sniper operation was canceled due to a recall to Kabul. This highlights the unpredictable nature of combat and the importance of adaptability.

Future Sniper Missions?

Looking ahead, I envision a future where snipers operate with cutting-edge technology. Remote-controlled guns equipped with AI assistants could manage multiple zones, while advanced camouflage and disrupters could create chaos for the enemy. Smart guns, similar to those seen in Squid Game, could be programmed to track and eliminate specific targets. AI drones, robot-controlled guns, and intelligent spotter systems might become standard equipment.

Imagine a scenario where a sniper infiltrates an urban area in a large African city to track terrorists. Using a smart scope, they could lock onto a target’s face with embedded facial recognition software. The smart bullet, equipped with a camera, would then track the target like a heat-seeking missile.

The Future of Snipers

I have no doubt that snipers will continue to play a vital role in future conflicts. While their core mission remains the same, the technology and capabilities will evolve dramatically within the next decade. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on how snipers might change in the coming years.

Did you know that CryptoLiveDaily editors wrote a book called Modern American Snipers? You can purchase it here. Below is an excerpt:

“Most people think of snipers as shooters perched in urban hides, dealing out death unseen from a considerable distance. But this description barely scratches the surface. Special operations snipers are men with stacked skill sets who have the ability to turn the tide of battles, even when they aren’t pulling the trigger. Snipers have played an outsized role in the War on Terror that has earned them the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, and countless other honors. These are the most experienced warriors on the battlefield, oftentimes the units’ best assaulters with years of door-kicking under their belt. These are the men who run ops in small teams across borders, or dress like locals and pull off high-risk vehicle reconnaissance and singleton missions in non-permissive environments.”
