Man Charged in Kansas City Road Rage Shooting Leaving Woman in ICU

The Incident

In Kansas City, Missouri, a 20-year-old man named Jamahn M. Tatum is facing multiple charges following a road rage incident that resulted in a woman suffering a gunshot wound to the head. According to court records, Tatum was charged with assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.

The incident occurred on May 4 at around 12:30 a.m., when officers were dispatched to reports of shots fired. A second call led them to a nearby location where they found a woman unresponsive in the front passenger seat of a 2021 Kia K5, located underneath a bridge. First responders noted that the woman had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head. As of May 13, she remained in the hospital ICU in critical condition.

How It Unfolded

According to the probable cause statement from the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), the incident began when the woman and the driver stopped to help a friend change a flat tire on the highway. After finishing, the driver told officers he attempted to merge back onto the roadway when a black Ford Fusion with tinted windows, later linked to Tatum, was traveling north in the outermost lane.

The driver merged in front of the suspect’s vehicle, and according to the statement, the Ford Fusion passed him on the left, got in front of him, and brake-checked him. The suspect vehicle then slowed and pulled parallel to the passenger side of the Kia. The woman, seated in the front passenger seat, rolled down her window and asked why the other driver had cut them off.

At this point, the driver said the suspect told them to “go ahead and pull over.” The driver then watched the Ford Fusion take a nearby exit ramp. Moments later, he heard around six gunshots and glass shattering. When he asked the passenger if she was okay, she was unresponsive with blood coming from her head.

The Investigation

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and tracked a dark sedan, consistent with a Ford Fusion, making a quick turn near the area just 16 seconds after the shooting. Cameras captured the license plate, which officers indicated linked back to Tatum.

KCPD says its gang unit located the Ford Fusion at an address associated with Tatum but found the license plate had been switched. On May 11, detectives returned and noted the original plate from the night of the shooting was back on the vehicle. On Thursday, May 14, detectives followed Tatum to his place of employment in Independence, where SWAT officers arrested him.

A handgun was found in his backpack at the time of his arrest. A search of his apartment also turned up multiple boxes of ammunition.

Tatum’s Account

During questioning, detectives say Tatum told them he owns the Ford but claimed he had not driven it recently due to transmission issues. Investigators note that initially, he denied switching the license plates, then acknowledged he had removed and replaced them.

Tatum ultimately claimed the shooting was self-defense, saying the victim’s vehicle had brake-checked him first, according to police. Detectives say he told them that as he exited the highway, he looked back and believed the woman had a gun - and that is when he fired.

When asked why he did not contact the police if it was self-defense, they say he claimed he did not think it was serious until the next day, when he learned the woman was hospitalized in critical condition. Officers indicate that he claimed he was scared and that his “mind was racing.”

Investigators say Tatum also told them he sold the gun used in the shooting shortly after the incident.

Current Status

As of May 16, Tatum remains in custody on a $100,000 bond. A court hearing has not yet been scheduled. No further information has been released.
