Largest U.S. Children's Hospital Launches 'Detransition Clinic' After $10M Settlement with Trump DOJ
Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) in Houston has reached a significant agreement that involves several key changes. The hospital will stop administering puberty blockers to children, pay $10 million in penalties, and establish a "detransition clinic." This decision follows an extensive investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the state of Texas.
The resolution marks the end of a long investigation conducted by Texas' Healthcare Program Enforcement Division. The division concluded that TCH engaged in fraudulent billing practices for "unallowable and illegal 'gender-transition' interventions" for Texas Medicaid, as stated in a Friday statement from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Under the terms of this landmark agreement, Texas Children’s will create the first-ever multidisciplinary clinic designed to provide medical care to patients who were subjected to "gender-transition" procedures. This Detransition Clinic will aim to help patients reverse the damage caused by what some describe as ideologically-motivated medical interventions.
All services provided through the detransition clinic will be funded by Texas Children’s and offered free of charge to patients for the first five years. Additionally, the settlement requires TCH to terminate five doctors who performed gender transition surgeries on children.
Paxton emphasized that today is a monumental day in the fight against the radical transgender movement. He described the settlement as a historic shift away from radical “gender” ideology. In addition to establishing the Detransition Clinic and securing millions in penalties, the settlement ensures that those responsible for harmful medical interventions are held accountable.
The hospital characterized the controversies surrounding its gender-affirming care program as an "unconscionable campaign of mistruths and mischaracterization." In a statement, TCH explained that the decision to settle was made to protect resources from ongoing litigation. The hospital mentioned that the settlement would allow them to focus on life-saving care and scientific discoveries.
Prominent pro-trans activists have criticized the move, with some calling it a form of "chicken--- stuff" by the hospital's leadership. However, detransitioner Chloe Cole praised the decision, stating that it represents a significant moment for the movement to end child mutilation. She expressed hope that the clinic will help victims of these procedures return to normalcy.
