Israel Strikes Down Top Hamas Military Leader in Gaza
The Killing of Hamas' Senior Military Leader
Despite a fragile US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, Israel conducted strikes on Gaza City that resulted in the death of Izz al-Din al-Haddad, one of Hamas’ most senior military leaders. According to a joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israeli Security Agency, the attack was described as a "precise strike." The incident occurred on Friday, with at least seven people killed and over 50 injured, many of whom were taken to Al-Shifa Hospital for treatment.
The Israeli military claimed that al-Haddad had been responsible for planning and executing the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, and for holding hostages during the aftermath. Additionally, they accused him of refusing to comply with the agreement led by former US President Donald Trump, which aimed for Hamas to disarm and for the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.
Continued Conflict and Vows of Retaliation
Following the announcement of al-Haddad’s death, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir vowed to continue targeting enemies and holding accountable those involved in the October 7th massacre. This statement underscores the ongoing tension between Israel and Hamas, despite the existence of a ceasefire.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem confirmed the death of al-Haddad, referring to him as “one of the greatest fighters of our Palestinian people.” Social media footage showed his coffin being carried through the streets of Gaza, with crowds gathering to mourn. One individual in the video said, “Rest in peace Abu Suhaib, and we will continue the struggle,” using al-Haddad's local nickname.
Impact on Civilian Population
Emergency services in Gaza reported that Israel struck a residential building in the al-Rimal neighborhood near Gaza City on Friday afternoon, followed by a second strike targeting a car on a nearby street. The director of Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, told CryptoLiveDaily that the medical complex has received the bodies of three women and a child among the seven dead from the strikes.
Paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society responded to both sites, transporting nearly 30 injured patients to Al-Saraya Field Hospital. These incidents highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where civilian lives are frequently caught in the crossfire.
Significance of Al-Haddad in Hamas
Al-Haddad is considered one of the most important figures in Hamas, known as the “Ghost of al-Qassam” due to his low profile. He leads the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. After the assassination of other Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, his brother Mohammed Sinwar, and Mohammed Deif, al-Haddad became one of the group’s top decision-makers.
A senior Israeli security official previously stated that the assassination of al-Haddad was successful, indicating the effectiveness of the operation. However, this attack occurs amid an ongoing ceasefire that has been in place since October, with Israel continuing to conduct strikes it claims are targeting Hamas or imminent threats to Israeli forces.
Ongoing Challenges and Ceasefire Concerns
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israeli strikes have killed more than 850 people in Gaza since the ceasefire went into effect in mid-October. On Thursday, the official in charge of implementing the US-brokered ceasefire acknowledged that the truce was “far from perfect,” even as he noted it brought “relative stability.”
Nickolay Mladenov, who previously served as the UN’s Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, emphasized that the disarmament of Hamas remains a key hurdle. He stated that the plan requires Hamas to step back from governance of Gaza, decommission its weapons, and work toward deradicalizing the area. Mladenov conditioned Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza on the fulfillment of these elements, particularly Hamas’ disarmament and achieving civil governance in Gaza.
