Israel Investigates Settler Violence and Military Misconduct Amid Ongoing West Bank Attacks
Rising Tensions and Settler Violence in the West Bank
Recent weeks have seen a surge in violence and unrest in the West Bank, with reports of settler attacks on Palestinians increasing. These incidents have sparked investigations by both the Israeli military and police, as well as growing concerns over the lack of enforcement from authorities.
Settler Attacks and Military Inaction
Palestinian media outlets have reported several violent incidents involving settlers in different areas of the West Bank. One such case occurred in the village of Kafin in the Tulkarem area, where a Palestinian was injured after being assaulted by settlers. Another incident took place in the Wadi Sa’ir region north of Hebron, where a woman was also injured during an attack by settlers.
In the South Hebron Hills, footage emerged showing a confrontation between settlers and Palestinians, with two settlers engaging in physical altercations with several Palestinians. These events highlight the ongoing tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated by the presence of armed settlers and the perceived inaction of security forces.
Hours earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they were investigating the conduct of soldiers involved in previous incidents, while the police launched inquiries into suspected crimes committed by settlers. The IDF has specifically looked into cases where troops allegedly stood by during attacks or even participated in them.
Investigating Soldiers' Conduct
One of the most serious incidents under investigation involved soldiers who reportedly did not intervene as masked Israeli settlers set fire to vehicles in the Palestinian village of Shuqba near Ramallah. According to the military, troops were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of vandalism and arson. When they arrived, some of the attackers fled, while others continued their actions. No arrests were made at the time, but later, Border Police officers arrested four Israeli civilians and a reservist associated with the Hagmar units, which are composed of local settlers serving in reserve duty.
The reservist’s weapon was confiscated, and he was suspended from his duties pending further investigation. The military has also pledged to look into the behavior of the soldiers who were present during the attack.

Reservists and Misconduct
Another incident under scrutiny involved footage showing a reservist dragging a bound and blindfolded Palestinian detainee in a central West Bank village. The IDF responded by stating that the individual was a soldier on active reserve duty who acted in a manner that deviated from established rules. The military said it was investigating the incident and that the Palestinian had attacked an Israeli before being detained. The soldier was reportedly instructed to watch over the detainee during a dispersal operation.
This incident has raised questions about the conduct of reservists and the broader issue of misconduct within the military and settler communities.
Settler Violence and Government Response
Settler violence against Palestinians has become increasingly frequent, with little enforcement from Israeli authorities. Critics argue that the government is turning a blind eye to these attacks, which have grown more deadly in recent years. The IDF recorded 867 incidents of nationalistic crime and settler violence in 2025, compared to 682 in 2024. This trend has led to widespread condemnation and calls for accountability.
The military has also faced criticism for its inaction during attacks, with troops sometimes standing by or even participating in the violence. This lack of prosecution has fueled frustration among Palestinians and human rights organizations.
Fatal Incident Near Jenin
On Saturday, Israeli forces killed a man near the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. The IDF confirmed that troops opened fire on a suspect who attempted to enter the camp without coordination. Intelligence indicated that the suspect may have intended to target Israeli forces. After firing into the air and failing to stop the suspect, the troops shot him, resulting in severe injuries.
The man, identified as 34-year-old Nour al-Din Kamal Hassan Fayyad, later died from his wounds. The Israeli military stated that medical assistance was provided before transferring him to the Palestinian Red Crescent. The incident has further intensified the already volatile situation in the region.
Israel launched a major military operation in early 2025 in multiple northern Palestinian refugee camps, including Jenin and Tulkarem, as part of what it calls the “Iron Wall” campaign. This operation has displaced nearly 40,000 Palestinians, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. The Jenin camp has been sealed off since early 2025 amid ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
