Channel 4 Viewers Call Gogglebox 'Reform TV'

Gogglebox Faces Criticism for Political Coverage

Viewers of Channel 4 have recently criticized the show Gogglebox for shifting its focus towards political content, with some accusing it of becoming “Reform TV.” This sentiment has been fueled by the show’s coverage of recent UK local elections, which included commentary on the right-wing party Reform and its notable gains. The episode also highlighted the significant losses faced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party.

During the episode, the cast members expressed their views on Reform, with Lara Fawcett, sister of Bear Grylls, stating, “We like Reform, don’t we?” as footage showcased the party's celebrations. Her mother-in-law, Sara, added, “I like Nigel Farage,” while acknowledging that many of her friends find him “awful.” Simon Minty, another cast member, remarked, “Whatever you think about them, there’s some appeal,” a comment that sparked considerable backlash on social media.

The focus on Reform’s political successes led to frustration among social media users. One user, Mario, accused the broadcaster of “promoting” the party, while Rich described the episode as being “full-on Reform.” Others, such as Darrxgh, noted that the show seemed to be “glazing up Reform,” and Adriano_Magliocco questioned, “When did Gogglebox become Reform TV?” Meanwhile, Gemma took a more direct stance, stating, “We don’t want politics on Gogglebox.”

Interestingly, both sides of the political spectrum felt targeted. Foster “Twelvetrees” Whiteboard claimed the show was “piling on Starmer,” while Pundeag called it a “hit job” on Farage. However, the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle, as the show’s commentators represent a diverse range of opinions and societal perspectives.

Public Reaction and Personal Reflections

The discussion around the political content on Gogglebox extended beyond social media. Daniella expressed concern about the mix of topics, saying, “I’m just concerned about what we’re mixing it up with.” Simon acknowledged his dislike for the political focus but admitted that Reform was “tapping into” something people wanted to hear. Julie of the Malone family shared her own feelings of disillusionment, stating she didn’t know who to vote for.

Shaun, another viewer, joked about hoping Starmer could endure until after the summer, referencing the Prime Minister’s promise to extend pub hours during the World Cup.

A History of Political Involvement

The show has a history of featuring cast members involved in politics. In 2014, the Michael family was dropped from the show after dad Andy announced his candidacy as a UKIP MP. Channel 4 stated, “Sadly any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox.” Despite this, the family returned a year later after Andy failed to win his seat. Tragically, Andy passed away in 2021 after a short illness.

The Michael family first appeared in Gogglebox’s debut episode in 2013, with dad Andy joined by wife Carolyn and children Louis, Alex, Pascal, and Katy.

New Political Ventures

Earlier this month, it was revealed that former cast member Josh Tapper had entered politics as a Labour Councillor. At 15, he first appeared on Gogglebox in 2013 and has since successfully won a seat for the Underhill ward in the London Borough of Barnet. Tapper shared his commitment to reversing Tory neglect and improving mental health support, stating, “I’ve always shown that no matter how big the challenge, I’ll always take it on and get the job done.”
