Cassidy's Primary Loss as Trump-Backed Rival and Treasurer Head to Runoff

The Runoff Election for Louisiana's Senate Seat
The race for the Republican primary in Louisiana’s Senate seat has reached a critical point, with a runoff election now set to determine the winner. According to reports, incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy did not advance past the first round of voting. Instead, the top two candidates—Louisiana Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming—are heading into a runoff next month.
Julia Letlow, who received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, secured the largest share of the vote in the initial round. This outcome highlights the continued influence of Trump within the Republican Party, even as he remains out of the political spotlight. John Fleming, another prominent candidate, came in second place. Neither Letlow nor Fleming managed to secure more than 50% of the votes, which necessitates a runoff between the two.
Cassidy, who was seeking a third term in the Senate, finished in third place. His defeat marks the end of his bid for re-election and signals a shift in the political landscape of Louisiana. During an election night speech, Cassidy did not directly mention Trump but made subtle references to the former president, particularly regarding his false claims about the 2020 election being stolen.
“When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, but you don’t pout, you don’t whine, you don’t claim the election was stolen, you don’t find a reason why you lost,” Cassidy said. “You thank the voters for the privilege of representing the state or the country for as long as you’ve had that privilege, and that’s what I’m doing right now.”
Trump later congratulated Letlow on his social media platform, Truth Social. In a post, he praised her as a “fantastic person” and expressed confidence that she would make a “brilliant Senator for the Great People of Louisiana.” He also highlighted his own contributions to the state, including his energy policies and a series of “CryptoLiveDailys” that he claimed were successful.
Intra-Party Tensions and Political Alliances
The primary race has been marked by significant intra-party tension. While Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee supported Cassidy, other high-profile Republicans, including Trump and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, backed Letlow. This division reflects broader challenges within the party as it navigates internal conflicts and shifting alliances.
Trump announced his endorsement of Letlow before she officially launched her campaign, calling her “a Great Star” who “has ALWAYS delivered for Louisiana.” Although he did not explicitly criticize Cassidy in the post, his support for Letlow was seen as a clear snub to the incumbent senator.
Polling leading up to the election showed Cassidy trailing behind both Letlow and Fleming. This trend underscored the growing influence of Trump within the party and the challenges faced by traditional Republican figures who do not align with his policies or rhetoric.
A History of Conflict with Trump
Cassidy has long been a target of Trump’s criticism. The Louisiana senator was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial in 2021. Additionally, Cassidy has been a vocal advocate for vaccines and has opposed some of the Trump administration’s changes to vaccine policies.
During the confirmation hearings for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is known for his skepticism toward vaccines, Cassidy expressed concerns about Trump’s decision to nominate him for the role of Secretary of Health and Human Services. Despite these concerns, Cassidy ultimately voted to confirm Kennedy.
The strained relationship between Cassidy and Trump resurfaced last month when the former president criticized the senator on Truth Social. Trump accused Cassidy of blocking the nomination of Casey Means as U.S. Surgeon General, claiming that she had stalled due to lack of support.
“For months, Senator Bill Cassidy (of the GREAT State of Louisiana!), a very disloyal person whose ‘TRUMP’ Endorsement got him elected, but later voted to impeach ‘President Trump’ on what has now proven to be a total Hoax and Scam, has stood in the way of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Nominee, Casey Means, for the important position of U.S. Surgeon General,” Trump wrote.
The Broader Implications
Cassidy is one of several Republican lawmakers who have faced public criticism from Trump this year. Rather than endorsing them, the former president has often supported their primary challengers. This pattern reflects a broader strategy within the party to align with Trump’s vision and maintain his influence.
Despite the political turmoil, the balance of power in Washington remains a key issue in the upcoming November midterm elections. However, Cassidy’s seat is considered a “Solid Republican” district by the Cook Political Report, making it unlikely to change hands. Still, the outcome of the runoff will have lasting implications for the future of Louisiana’s representation in the Senate.
