Glen Powell Shares Denzel Washington's Advice on Balancing Work and Life

Glen Powell: The Busiest Actor in Hollywood and How He Stays Motivated
Glen Powell has become one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, known for his relentless work ethic and diverse filmography. With a number of high-profile projects in the works, it's no surprise that he's been keeping busy. From his recent roles in How to Make a Killing and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, to the upcoming release of The Great Beyond, Powell continues to prove that he's one of the most in-demand actors in the industry.
In addition to his film work, Powell is also working on Season 2 of Chad Powers and Judd Apatow’s new movie, The Comeback King. His schedule is packed, but rather than feeling overwhelmed, he's thriving. When asked about his workload on the Awards Circuit podcast, Powell shared his perspective:
"I find that being hardworking is something I really admire in my colleagues and other people. Work ethic's always been something that, especially when you're on a film set and you have all these people kind of investing in something, I love that quality. At the same time, I think people are worried about me, but I'm fine. I'm having a blast."
This attitude has helped him maintain a positive outlook despite his hectic schedule. Powell has been consistently working for years, but things really took off after his role in Top Gun: Maverick. Since 2022, he's appeared in eight movies (six as a lead), two TV shows, and even a podcast series. With more projects on the horizon, including films directed by J.J. Abrams and Apatow, it's clear that Powell isn't slowing down anytime soon.
The Influence of Denzel Washington
One of the key factors in Powell's success has been the advice he received from Denzel Washington. During an interview, Powell recalled how Washington encouraged him to move to Los Angeles and offered some invaluable guidance:
"I heard it from Denzel Washington when I first, you know, he was the guy who convinced me to move out to LA...but he was the guy who basically said, 'Don't look in other lanes.'"
Powell has often cited this advice as one of the most impactful pieces of wisdom he's ever received. He has long admired Washington, even stating, "I want to be Denzel Washington." Their collaboration on The Great Debaters in 2007 played a significant role in shaping Powell's career, as Washington encouraged him to pursue acting seriously.
Focused on His Lane
By following Washington's advice, Powell has been able to focus on his own path without getting distracted by external pressures or comparisons. This focus has allowed him to build a successful career while maintaining a deep passion for his work. He recently reflected on this during an interview:
"And for me, I'm having the time of my life. I'm getting to act with folks at the highest level, people I've admired for a long time. Like with Chad Powers, getting to co-create a show with one of my great friends and live in a world that I really love – the world of college football – is something that anybody who knows me knows I'm just like a massive fan – and I'm getting to work with this very deep bench of some of the most talented actors in Hollywood. And I'm having a great time. So, I'm not burnt out."
Looking Ahead
Powell's dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed. With Season 2 of Chad Powers expected to premiere on Hulu in 2026 and The Great Beyond set to hit theaters on November 13, there's no sign of him slowing down. His ability to balance multiple projects while staying true to his passion is a testament to his work ethic and vision.
For fans and aspiring actors alike, Powell's journey serves as an inspiration. By staying focused, embracing his lane, and maintaining a love for his work, he continues to thrive in one of the most competitive industries in the world.
